Juice: Spiced Apple Pie

SpicedApplePie1of2Nutmeg is certainly not something that is typically associated with juicing, and for a good reason. However, you can take advantage of this healthy spice by stirring some freshly grated nutmeg into your juice.

It is thought to have anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, and stress-relieving properties. Just be sure not to use a heavy hand; nutmeg is thought to be a hallucinogenic in larger doses.

Beets: whether you like them or not

I was never a big beet fan. In fact, I have memories of pickled beets from Thanksgiving dinner that haunt me to this day. I assumed that beets were a write-off for my diet and that they wouldn’t be a food that I would enjoy or bother to purchase at the grocery store.

However, when I started juicing, I decided to give beets another chance in my diet. I thought it might be a sneaky way to pack in this super food without noticing it too much.

Packed with nutrition

According to Ian Marber’s Supereating, beets are rich in folic acid and vitamin C, for starters. Folic acid is essential for healthy cell formation and is thought to prevent the mutation of cells that may lead to cancer formation.

Beets also have mineral powerhouses like potassium and manganese. Vitamin C and manganese both help with iron absorption, so they are a great food to combine with leafy greens.

Spiced Apple Pie Juice

This Spiced Apple Pie juice is a great way to sneak beets into your diet. In addition to the beets, this juice provides many nutrients from apples, ginger, and carrots. Add in some freshly grated nutmeg to increase the anti-inflammatory properties of your juice.

Ingredients

  • 1 apple, peeled
  • ½ medium-sized beet, ends trimmed, cut into small pieces
  • 2 medium-sized carrots
  • fresh ginger (approx 1″ x 1″ x ¾”), peeled
  • for adding in: ¼ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg

Instructions

Juice all ingredients together. Place nutmeg in a glass and pour juice in. Stir well. Enjoy immediately. Serves 1.

    I really don’t like beets, but I am considering juicing them now that I have my Breville! :-) I too, figure this is a great way to sneak the gross-yet-healthy veggie into my diet.

    This looks like a delicious recipe. I’ll have to look for fresh nutmeg the next time I’m shopping.
